SAN NARCISO, Calif. (Bennington Vale Evening Transcript) -- An old adage holds that there are no atheists in foxholes. There certainly aren't any in FOX News. But as CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer unwittingly discovered, they do seem to thrive in the chaos of category EF5 twisters. Blitzer asked a clever survivor if she had thanked God for her life-saving decision making abilities and personal fortitude. She responded that she was an atheist. In a bizarre twist to the story, however, nearly all the women who spoke with CNN personnel Tuesday confessed that the combination of the natural disaster and the hollow, mechanical prattle of the network's reporters had rendered them faithless.

During interviews with tornado survivors in Moore, Okla., Blitzer praised one local woman whose quick thinking helped her protect her infant son from the storm.

"I guess you gotta thank the Lord, right?" Blitzer said in an attempt to wrap up the conversation. After a moment of awkward silence, Blitzer pressed the point again, asking, "Do you thank the Lord for that split-second decision?"

"I'm actually an atheist," the woman replied, followed by a nervous laugh.

"And, you know, I don't blame anybody for thanking the Lord," she added.

Because Blitzer pressured the woman for a response to what initially seemed a rhetorical comment, and which suggested that she attribute her efforts to a deity, critics attacked Blitzer for peddling a conservative religious agenda on air. But women who met with Blitzer that day said they never detected an ulterior motive in his interviewing techniques -- they just suddenly stopped believing in a higher power while in the reporter's presence.

The Oklahoma women who interacted with Blitzer admitted to realizing their utter absence of faith and spirituality in the very instant they assessed the gravity of the tornado's destruction amid the pointless, soulless, rhetorical questioning of a talking head from a lazy, irresponsible, profit-hungry perversion of journalism masquerading as a news organization.

"When I stared into Wolf Blitzer's dead, constipated eyes, it suddenly dawned on me that no God could be so cruel as to create something like that," one survivor said.
