SAN NARCISO, Calif. (Bennington Vale Evening Transcript) -- A new study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides compelling evidence for American men to stick by 2017 New Year’s weight-loss resolutions. Nearly 50 percent of men, the report found, remain seated for three-quarters of the day, compared to only 13 percent of women. The result? A rise in obesity. However, President-elect Donald Trump offered some unusual advice as part of his commitment to overhaul the existing U.S. health system. The conversation came from a recent briefing on the threat of North Korea. Rather than discussing the predictably erratic antics of Pyongyang’s minuscule but tyrannical autocrat, Trump raved about a new fad in weight loss based on the North Korean diet of dirt and tree bark, which is sure to help millions shed unwanted pounds in 2017. This “all natural” and “portion-sensible” diet, Trump opined, can reduce American dependence on Obamacare and food stamps.
Dictators Make Great Dietitians
During his campaign, Trump often referred to Kim Jong-un as a “bad dude” and a “maniac,” but also said he would be willing to meet him over a hamburger to discuss smoothing the relationship between the two nuclear-armed powers. Trump has a history of criticizing and simultaneously admiring foreign dictators. His affections for Russian President Vladimir Putin are the stuff of Hallmark holiday specials. Kim Jong-un’s fiery denouncements of his opposition, reliance on nuclear weapons to overcome the occasional international impasse, and his impassioned social media presence have earned Trump’s admiration.Trump also praised Kim for his absolute control over his people and the defied perception he has engendered through a legacy of repression, hostility and forced starvation.
“I think the Russian people are beautiful people,” Trump said. “Their women are stunning. Just stunning. So slim and fit and tight. That’s because all they’re allowed to eat are beets and some sort of mushroom paste. Then I see the North Korean women -- how they worship their pudgy, pie-faced, sausage-fingered midget ruler -- and I think, that’s something. They all look like young girls. Hard, gymnast types. With America’s weight problems, I believe North Korea holds the solution.”
North Korea’s Dirt Diet: Grizzly Adams Meets the Donner Party
The typical North Korean diet consists of tree bark, loose soil, weeds and sometimes rice, even though former ruler Kim Jong-il was known to have enjoyed lavish meals. The long-term consumption of rich meats, dairy products and exotic produce, however, likely ruined Kim Jong-il’s system, according to the emaciated doctors who were allowed to autopsy the corpse after his death in December 2011.The examination confirmed the Dear Leader’s death by heart failure. Doctors said that Kim’s diet -- rich with cognac, cigars and gourmet cuisine -- contributed to the problem. “It was a sacrifice the Dear Leader made for the people,” the withered medical team reported in 2011. “To become powerful, we needed all the tree bark and dirt we could get.”
Members of South Korea’s intelligence community found that Kim Jong-il’s policy of incrementally eliminating food for his citizens -- a move to help pay for war machines and nuclear weapons -- had yielded unexpected benefits for the world’s littlest despot.
U.S. State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said at the time: “According to the reports from Seoul, when the North Korean people chew on bark and dirt -- their primary sources of sustenance during the Kim Jong-il regime -- they end up separating the uranium from the soil with their saliva, which accelerated the process of enriching it to weapons-grade.”
Crowley had hoped that with the loss of Kim Jong-il, the people of North Korea would revert to eating cooked meats, fish, vegetables and other nutrients that would not yield weapons-grade uranium. Unfortunately as December 2014, intelligence showed that rationing and the mass internment of perceived dissidents -- or the marginally well fed -- in labor camps had increased greatly under Kim Jong-un.
Because the United States and its allies have continued to impose tough economic sanctions on Pyongyang in response to Kim Jong-un’s ongoing saber rattling and aggressive buildup of nuclear weapons, the North Korean people have been left with even less to eat. And the problem has spread to those among the highest ranks of government.
Under Kim Jong-un, Even Meat is Recycled
In March 2012, state media agency KCNA released a publicity photo of Kim Jong-un visiting the Taesongsan General Hospital, being constructed by the national army, as a goodwill message. But by showing a staff of chefs instead of surgeons, the grotesque horrors visited upon the North Korean people by their leaders were revealed to the world on film. When KCNA posted the picture, some officials attempted to explain that Pyongyang had started training chefs to save money. Obsolete equipment and poor hygienic conditions had created a difficult environment for surgeons, who became increasingly difficult to train. But for North Korean cooks, working in unsanitary conditions and hacking apart meat was seen as a natural fit.
Further probing revealed that the hospital, which adjoins a meat pie shop, was really just a food preparation station for an unthinkable and reprehensible dish that Kim Jong-un referred to as “thin pig.”
Americans Dieters Biting at the Bark
Just as one person’s trash is another’s treasure, so are one people’s malnutrition and abuse another group’s miracle weight-loss systems.“Obesity continues to be a significant health concern,” said Marge Blomquat of the National Center for Health Statistics at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in a telephone interview. Weighing in at a biscuit shy of 300 pounds, Blomquat can no longer travel outside her bedroom for in-person press briefings.
She added that “around 17 percent of young people aged two to 19 are considered obese. But that’s an improvement.”
Blomquat’s studies show that the government under President George W. Bush took aggressive action to remedy the situation, with the benefits being realized only now. According to reports by the nation’s governors, as many as 27 states witnessed substantial decreases in food consumption and weight gain, especially in children, single mothers and African Americans.
“President Obama, on the other hand, enforced policies that will made things worse,” Blomquat said. “He expanded food assistance programs to feed people, where the Republicans fought to cut them. That’s why I’m so relieved that Donald Trump seized the presidency and that Republicans wrested control of Congress from socialist elites. This administration can now renew efforts to help Americans get thin. Despite their ideological differences with Kim Jong-un, the representatives I’ve spoken with are completely in favor of the North Korean Diet.”
Fad diets have come and gone over the years. The Hollywood Diet. The Miami Beach Diet. The Economically Disadvantaged and Living on Food Stamps Diet. But nothing shows as much promise, Blomquat and others claim, as the North Korean Diet. And even the one-percent of Americans who regularly can afford to eat nutritious and freshly prepared food are jumping on board.
“For one thing, it’s affordable,” Blomquat explained. “Tree bark, dirt, insects, plants growing on the side of the highway and even the occasional dead opossum or hobo -- these are all low calorie, low fat and low carb food sources that people can find around their neighborhoods. Most of the time, they’re absolutely free. And our studies show that these diets can melt away five to eight pounds a week -- without exercise!”
For millions of obese Americans, 2017 may just be the year that they’re able to keep that New Year’s resolution to get into shape, thanks to the unlikeliest ally.
